2017 Volunteer of the Year Award

“Given in recognition of outstanding contributions and commitment to Water Polo throughout Manitoba.”

Susan Shinkarik

Susan began volunteering with BWPC when her daughter started playing over 6 years ago. She took on various jobs, regardless of what they were, and has taken on more each year. Susan will spend time with new members answering questions and making them feel comfortable with the sport. Whether it is new programs, fundraising or other activities, Susan helps out where and when needed, going the extra distance. At the local level, Susan has been on Bushido's Board (currently President) and contributed to school league (Grant Park).

At the Provincial level she helped PT with fundraising and chaperoned. At the National level she volunteered in a number of areas when Bushido/Neptunes successfully hosted the 16U Girls Nationals in 2012. The past 2 years she has been on MWPA's board as Secretary. She has demonstrated dedication to making the sport grow through solid support of intro programs and camps. Her leadership, positive attitude and determination make her a great volunteer!

In her current role as President of BWPC, Susan has contributed significantly to getting Bushido athletes and parents involved in the 14U NCL program. Whenever another board member is not able to complete as task, Susan will either do it herself, or quickly find someone who can. She communicates with all members of the club (athletes, coaches, parents and volunteers), other clubs and MWPA.

Two years ago she enrolled herself and recruited 4 other members to join MWPA's Board of Directors.

Susan is energetic and willing to take on any job and make sure it gets done. Whether it is something she has done before or not, she is willing to take time to learn how, and then apply those new skills. You know a job is in “good hands” when Susan is looking after it.

2017 Athlete of the Year Award

Athlete of the Year Award “Given in recognition of outstanding athletic development, achievement and commitment”

Devyn Smith

Devyn has been playing water polo for 8 years. She is a competitive athlete, coach and referee. Devyn currently plays with Bushido Water Polo (19U, OW), Team Sask (19U) and Utah Premier (18U). She did play with Manitoba's Provincial Team and Grant Park HS.

Devyn is able to compete on a variety of teams at different levels of competition.

She is able to lead and be led as required. Devyn is committed to training 5 times a week locally and participates in training with out of province teams. She works hard to develop her skills as a competitive athlete while keeping her grades up and volunteering. Devyn is a strong team player, very coachable and able to deal respectfully with officials and opponents.

Devyn was selected to the All Star Team for the 19U NCL Western Championships. Devyn has also been selected for the 20U National Team (long list) and will be attending a centralization camp in August. Devyn will be competing with Utah Premier Water Polo in July 2017.
